Osterfest in Österreich - Celebrating Easter in Austria

Hallo an alle! Vielen Dank für eure zahlreichen Kommentare, ich habe mich über jeden Einzelnen sehr gefreut! Ich hoffe, ihr habt Ostern gut verbracht!? Das Wetter war bei uns ja sensationell schön!

Nachdem einige von euch den Brauch des Osterstrauches nicht kannten, dachte ich mir, euch einen kleinen Ein- bzw. Rückblick auf das Osterfest und seine Bräuche in Österreich zu geben.

As some of you didn´t know the custom to decorate pussy pillow branches with eggs (there is no English word for how we call it), I thought I will show you how we celebrate Easter here in Austria with some of our traditions.

Am Karfreitag färben wir die Eier ...

On Good Friday we colour the eggs ...

... einige davon werden dann zusammen mit Osterfleisch ("Gselchtes" sagen wir dazu), Osterpinze (süßes Weißbrot) und Kren (Meerrettich) in einen Korb gelegt, mit einem Ostertuch bedeckt und meist einer Blume geschmückt in die Kirche zur Fleischweihe getragen.

... some of them are given in a basket together with cured meat, sweet white bread and horseradish. All is covered with an embroidered cloth and decorated most times with a flower. This basket will be carried into church to consecrate the food.

Um 14 Uhr findet dann die Fleischweihe in der Kirche statt ...

At 2 p.m. there is the consecration of the food in church ...

Aus der Kirche zurückgekehrt wird alles für das große Essen vorbereitet.

Back from church we start to prepare everything for eating the delicious food.

Ich liebe es, zu Ostern typisch steirische/österreichische Sachen zu tragen. Auch wenn es kein klassisches Dirndl ist, so gibt es bei uns viele verschiedene Varianten Tracht zu tragen. Und das ist eine davon :-)!

I love to wear typical Styrian/Austrian clothes on Easter days. Although it´s no traditional "Dirndl" we have so many different ways to wear traditional costumes, and this is one of it :-)!

Auch ein dekorierter Tisch gehört zum Festessen!

This includes a lovely decorated table too!

Ich könnte euch noch viel mehr über Ostern und seine Bräuche erzählen, aber ich denke, das wäre zu viel an dieser Stelle. Vielleicht schreibe ich nächstes Jahr wieder über ein paar andere Bräuche.

I could tell you much more about Easter and all the customs we have here but I think it would be too much. perhaps next year I will write you more about other traditions we have at Easter time.
